Dr. Cheryl Newman is our Grand Marshal for 2019!
A graduate from the Medical College of Georgia as her class’s valedictorian, Dr. Newman was one of the first physicians to care for people that were afflicted with AIDS in the 1980s. Dr. Newman helped create the first protocols that focused on improving health and empathy for those seeking care.
She has been instrumental in Augusta University’s Ryan White Program since its beginnings in 1991 and expansion in 1995, eventually becoming the Medical Director in 2015. The Ryan White Program exists to overcome barriers and ensure access to health care for people living with HIV. She is known for her dedication, expertise, and kindness – empowering her patients to prosper, even when some shunned them.
A researcher as well, Dr. Newman’s efforts conducting clinical trials of antiretroviral therapy have been beneficial to the many who need these life-saving drugs to survive and thrive beyond an HIV diagnosis. Her studies have also included treatments for Hepatitis C and PCP pneumonia - as well as focusing on the disproportionate HIV incidence in women of color.
Her continuing efforts obtaining grant funding and conducting numerous studies over her 30 years as a doctor have greatly improved the lives of many in our community, for which we are grateful. We honor Dr. Newman, who’s juggled raising three children - while caring for many of our loved ones - as Augusta Pride’s 2019 Grand Marshal!
